Mare Nostrum is a diploma project that begun in September 2015 and was achieved in October 2016. It started with a memorandum on the subject of the memory of inhabiting through the Mediterranean sea, and ended with the presentation of four architectural projects (a winery, an art storage, a greenhouse and a fish market).
Our aim was to work on different notions linked to the concept of memory in Mediterranea : the house (heimlich/ unheimlich), the landscape, the natural elements... While doing so, we also wanted to question the tools that we wanted to engage for our diploma project, as well as our expectations from it.
Thus, besides these four projects, the main point of our diploma consisted in making a long trip through the Mediterranean Sea. This trip was documented via drawings (210 of them), collages, models made with different techniques, photographies and videos.
We also focused on the idea of traditional craftmanship as a vehicle of memory, and more precisely on the object of the carpet. There was a research book made on the subject, followed by a carpet that was designed by us and woven by Turkish craftsmen. Its design represented our four architectural projects via traditional symbols. These architectural projects were a reflection on the notion of the living space that is deconstructed and spread throughout the Mediterranean region. We wanted to propose projects about living at the scale of the territory – rather than at that of a house.
All in all, this diploma was our opportunity to look back on our studies, but also on our Turkish & French origins and Mediterranean legacy.
